3 Weeks Old

Although the puppies are still very much babies with their multiple naps and frequent nursing, they have been getting playful with each other, so we scrubbed the puppy chew toys last night and introduced a couple of them today. They sniffed them and did a little bit of mouthing them (still toothless.)  Soon enough they’ll be scrapping over them, but for now the play was peaceful.

Visitors :)

The puppies (and Finley) received lots of attention from family members who came out to visit. Niece-in-law Jamie, grand-nephew Logan, sister-in-law Lynn and niece Sara spent time snuggling the puppies. The puppies cooperated by accepting all the love.

Special thanks to Lynn who cleaned up the pee-fest that followed the naps in laps.

Lapful Of Napping Puppies

I sat in the middle of the whelping box for a while this morning while the puppies crawled on and around me, all finally finding a spot to fall asleep.

#2 has gravitated to the corner of the whelping box a few times and we’ve found him sleeping in this position (below!)

Mama Finley

Although Finley seems to be enjoying longer stretches away from the puppies and time outdoors with Chev and Xupe, she dutifully returns to her puppies to sniff their back ends (attending to them as needed) and then she lies down to let them nurse.  The two photos below were taken within seconds of each other.  The first is Finley returning to her napping babies. They awaken upon her arrival and quickly make their way to their lunch as she stretches alongside them.

Action!

IMG_4799 IMG_4803

I take quite a few snapshots (using both my phone and my “real” camera) and most of the shots come out looking blurry because there’s so much movement going on. The puppies’ coordination seems to increase by the hour and they increasingly sit up and walk to get where they’re going. Even having seen this with past litters, we are constantly amazed.

Puppies – Day 16

The puppies’ pattern of nursing and sleeping continues and they keep on growing. They’ve all taken their “first steps” although those steps are wobbly and erratic.  The top left photo has (from left to right) #3, #2 and #1. The photo to the right is #2 in the background and #3 in the foreground.

2 Year Old Edgar

Edgar at 2 a Edgar at 2
We love hearing from former puppy families about how their dogs are doing.  The photos and message below arrived from Wisconsin this week. Edgar (formerly #7 , “Norling Rise’s Loganberry,”) was among the dogs who just had his second birthday.
“I’m late to respond but just wanted to thank you so much for the birthday wishes for Edgar and Litter B. We celebrated big – I made Edgar a peanut butter apple cake frosted with peanut butter (before and after photos attached). He also received two new toys, which he unwrapped all by himself. We cannot believe they’re already two years old, and in less than two months we’ll celebrate his “Gotcha” day again, too.
Speaking of unwrapping presents, I’ve noticed Edgar is super skilled at using his paws – not only does he hold toys, bones, etc., but lately he’s been touching my hand with his paw as if to hold my hand, or he’ll tap or push my hand with his paw if he wants my attention. It’s so human. Do your Griffs do that, too?
Edgar continues to amaze us with his intelligence and cracks us up with his goofy personality. He’s quite a ham, and he’s the smartest dog I’ve ever met – our parents have commented on that, too. He is very vocal and loves to talk to us, especially first thing in the morning. We were laughing while reading your recent blog post about the day Biff picked up Chev; ‘we’ve got our hands full.’ Edgar has the same energy and drive, which we are so grateful for, and it seems as he gets older it’s also becoming easier for him to relax.
I feel like I could sit here all day writing about Edgar, and I know you can relate, so I’ll stop here and promise more stories and updates to come :)”

Up And Moving

IMG_4779 IMG_4780

These photos are from very early this morning.  I’m not able to include video clips into this blog so I made a couple of snapshots from the video I took of #2 making another attempt to exit the whelping box.  Notice his right paw on the edge in the photo below.  We have a guard panel that fits into the “open” side of the pen that we’ve dropped into place now as he is not the only one looking out into the house and making efforts to escape.  They’re doing this even as they are learning to stand and walk… and climb!

Up And Around

The light at daybreak wasn’t great, but I captured these photos of #2’s increasing mobility, navigating his way around the whelping box and looking up and out to what’s beyond.  All of their eyes have started to open and they all respond well to snuggling with us.  They’re still small enough that I can safely carry one on my arm and hand, tucked along my side, while I do small chores with my other hand.
