Norling Rise roster

Drum roll, please…  Here are all the names of the Chev/Finley “A” litter, whelped on 11/14/13 litter.  Their “kennel names” are all authors whose names begin with “A”:

One is “Norling Rise’s Alexandre Dumas”, call name is “Aya” (lives in U.P. Michigan).

Two is “Norling Rise’s Antoine de Saint Exupery”, call name is “Xupe” (lives with Biff and Patti)

Three is “Norling Rise’s Aesop”, call name is “Dutch” (lives in Mpls.)

Four is “Norling Rise’s Agatha Christie”, call name is “Gracie” (lives in Forest Lake, MN)

Five is “Norling Rise’s Astrid Lindgren”, call name is “Riggins” (lives in Eden Prairie, MN)

Six is “Norling Rise’s Anne Frank”, call name is “Jazzy” (lives in Aitkin, MN)

Seven is “Norling Rise’s Anton Chekhov”, call name is “Barley” (will live in New York)

Eight is “Norling Rise’s A.A. Milne”, call name is “Woody” (lives in Deephaven, MN)

Nine is “Norling Rise’s Aldo Leopold”, call name is “Stache” (lives in White Bear, MN)

Ten is “Norling Rise’s Arthur Conan Doyle”, call name is “Arlo” (lives in Houlton, WI)

Eleven is “Norling Rise’s Ayn Rand”, call name is “Chesny” (lives in Manitoba, Canada)

Twelve is “Norling Rise’s Aldous Huxley”, call name is “Atz” (lives in Littleton, Colorado)

I guess we could call this a literate litter.  For those of you who want a little challenge, see if you can pair the following titles with the authors without referencing Google.  No prizes awarded, just for fun.

The Three Musketeers, Pippi Longstocking, Winnie the Pooh, The Fountainhead, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Brave New World, Murder on the Orient Express, The Little Prince, The Diary of Anne Frank (ok, that’s a give-away), A Sand County Almanac, The Lady with the Dog and The Tortoise and the Hare.

Off they go, one by one

We had 8 puppies when we woke up this morning and we’re down to 4, as of 2:15 this afternoon.  Numbers 5, 10, 1 and 12 have all been picked up by their families.  “Riggins”, “Arlo”, “Aya” and “Atz” (respectively) have all departed today.  Finley has been attentive and we can’t tell yet if she realizes her children are disappearing, but we’ve been making sure she continues to get playtime with them.

And now there are ten…

I drafted but didn’t get this posted right away as I’d intended earlier today (Friday)…

It’s Friday afternoon and two families have already come to pick up their puppies.   I wasn’t home early in the day so I wasn’t able to get a photo of the first family.  (Will you send us a photo of Jazzy at home and we’ll post it?)

Stache’s people (short for moustache, note the polar fleece receiving blanket) were still here when I got home.  I’ve gotta say what a joy it is to see how excited folks are to be getting these puppies.  Our hearts are melting.

Lucky puppies

Puppies “Four” and “EIght” left with their families late this afternoon and we were delighted to hear back from both households that things were going well.  Each of the remaining puppies got some playtime with Finley again tonight, very sweet to observe.  We’ll be sending off another batch of puppies tomorrow.

Last night for all 12 together!

The puppies turned 8 weeks old today and are ready for their lives with families!  The vet was here this afternoon to implant chips, do vaccinations and physicals.  Families will arrive beginning tomorrow to pick up their “babies.”  It will be hard to let go of them but they are SO ready to get out into the world.  We hope that you’ll send us photos and stories about them and call if you have questions.

No question it was a busy two months for us, especially for Biff who did 95% of the work with this litter.   What an honor to have been both an observer and nurturer of these little lives.  We are confident they will be a joy to all of you.

Nail clipper note

I’ve been the one in charge of nail clipping and this job will soon transfer to all you new puppy people.  The regular small clipper (a basic one from the drug store) is still working for the puppies’ nails.  I trim them when I can feel the little hook forming at the end of the nail and I trim just that hook off in one clean snip.  They all handle it well, likely because I do it when they first fall asleep and they’re so “out of it” that they don’t notice me moving their paws and claws around.

I bought the nail scissors (below) but haven’t needed to use it yet.  The basic nail clipper comes in another size bigger and it’s so easy to see where you’re nipping, that I’ll probably stay with that style.  But the pet store woman recommended the scissors-style below.

The most important thing is that you keep up on nail trimming.  Vet techs do the job well, if you need to go that route, and they do it for a reasonable price.  Griffs don’t need to go to the dog groomer so you just need to attend to nails, a little brushing and occasional baths.

New collars and playtime with mom

Biff bought the puppies their first collars today and put them on them for a little getting used to.  The collars soon became chew toys so none of the puppies wore them for long.  Again they spent some time out playing in the rug covered space – this morning, this afternoon and again this evening.

It’s taken some separation from the puppies to get Finley’s milk to dry up, but she is far enough into the weaning transition that we let her have some play time with “her kids” this evening, one at a time.  It was charming to watch them together.  Here are a few shots.

Frog update

DSC_0060

Froggy lost his eye.  I snipped off the black thread when I saw it hanging and he’s still usable.  The squeaker is still squeaking and he hasn’t been shredded yet.  We’ve noticed that every toy gets some play – from the original giraffes (1 large, 1 small) to the small rawhide-like toys that Biff introduced today (12 of them so everyone could have their own.)  Puppy life continues to be about chewing, romping, snuggling, eating/drinking and sleeping – pretty much in that order.

New toys discovered – water and the water dish!

I’ve seen a few of the puppies pawing at the water in the water dish over the last few days.  Today I watched with humor as “Four” and “Seven” discovered that the water they drink out of a dish is also fun to play with.  After some pushing the dish around and splashing the water, “Four” (Gertie) lifted the dish with her mouth and spilled more of it onto the floor.  (No problem, a little water on the floor is an easy clean-up.)

Wild rumpus

We ran two “sessions” of rip-roaring exercise time today, making sure that each puppy had at least a couple of turns to race, chase, wrestle, tussle and explore around the new “play” room.  Most of the photos were a blurr (like this last one) and offer a sense of the energy.  It was riotous with just 3 or 4 of them out at a time.  We scoop up puppies when the play gets too ramped up and let them cool down for a couple of minutes in our arms.  You should feel those little heartbeats after they’ve been running.  They’re getting some great cardio!
